James Tiberius Kirk spends most of his life in Starfleet, from the age of 17 when he joins Starfleet Academy until he dies on Veridian III at the hands of of Dr Tolian Soran.

When Kirk enters the Academy in 2250, he has already had a troubled childhood. At the age of 13 he was on Tarsus IV when Kodos took brutal measures to deal with the planet's famine. He is one of only nine eyewitnesses to survive the massacre and never forgets what he saw. Kirk's early experiences mat go a long way to explaining his determination to excel.

A man called Mallory helps Kirk get into the Academy and his faith in the young man is amply awarded . Kirk is a brilliant and dedicated student, though some, including an upperclassman called Finnegan, who subjects him to various practical jokes, think him a little serious and bookish.

Kirk's reputation increases when he is the only cadet ever to beat the Kobayashi Marui scenario, a test designed to to confront aspiring starship captains with a no-win situation. Kirk breaks into the Academy's computer and re-programs the scenario so that he can win. he is commended for original thinking. Even at this early stage in his career, Kirk is dedicated to duty. As a midshipman he becomes close friends with one of his instructors, Ben Finney. During Quirk's first year at the Academy they are both assigned to the U.S.S. Republic. The young Ensign Kirk relieves Finney on watch and discovers that he has left a circuit to the ship's atomic matter piles open, seriously endangering the ship and the lives of everyone onboard. Kirk closes the circuit and logs the incident. As a result, Finney earns a reprimand and loses any immediate chance of promotion. he fails to accept responsibility for the incident and blames Kirk.

Kirk graduates from the Academy in 2254 and is assigned to the U.S.S. Farragut NCC-1647 under Captain Garrovick. Within a year, Kirk has made lieutenant. He first experiences command when he leads a planetary survey party, during this mission he befriends the leader of the local hill people, a man called Tyree.

In 2257, Kirk is involved in a serious incident that leaves him deeply troubled for many years. Near Tycho IV, the Farragut encounters a mysterious and dangerous cloud creature. Kirk hesitates before firing the ships' phasers, and, when the creature attacks, 200 people, including Captain Garrovick, are killed.

At this point in his career, Kirk is involved with a number of women, including Areel Shaw. He and Carol Marcus have a son, David, in 2261, but she asks him not to become involved in the child's upbringing. Although he sees Carol Marcus a number of times in the following years, he respects her wishes. Later the same year, Kirk is involved with the future Janet WaIIace, an endocrinologist, but their differing career goals pull them apart. In fact, it seems that Kirk's dedication to his career makes it almost impossible for him to form lasting relationships.

In 2263, at the age of 31, Kirk is made a captain and replaces Christopher Pike as commander of the Enterprise. The following year, he begins his famous five-year mission. Kirk excels as a captain; he is frequently decorated, and his exploits become required reading at the Academy. However, in 2267 he is the first Starfleet captain ever to stand trial when he is accused of the murder of Ben Finney. During the trial it emerges that Finney, who has become obsessed with Kirk, has faked his own death and tried to frame the Captain, and Kirk is exonerated.

When the five-year mission ends in 2269, Kirk is promoted to admiral. He accepts the promotion against the advice of Dr. McCoy, who advises him that he will never be happy unless he is in command of a starship.

As an admiral, Kirk becomes chief of Starfleet Operations. He returns to the field in 2271, when the Federation is threatened by V'Ger After the threat has passed, Kirk begins a new five-year mission, once again commanding the Enterprise. The mission ends in 2276, and five years later Kirk decides to retire from Starfleet. During his retirement. he falls in love with a woman celled Antonia whom he meets at his uncle's farm in Idaho. They live in a beautiful mountain cabin but, in 2284, Kirk returns to Starfleet against her wishes and their relationship ends.

James Kirk returns to Starfleet in 2284. At this point of his life, he is beginning to feel his age and does not think that he is young enough to return to the bridge of a starship. Instead he takes up a post as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, and moves into an apartment in San Francisco so that he can be near his work.

In 2285, Kirk takes the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on a training mission. At the same time, Khan Noonien Singh takes control of the U.S.S. Reliant and determines to wreak revenge on Kirk, who left him on Ceti Alpha V in 2267.

The Reliant had been assigned to Project Genesis, led by Dr. Carol Marcus and the son she had with Kirk, Dr. David Marcus. Khan sends a message to Regula 1 where the project is based, telling them that Admiral Kirk has ordered the Marcuses to hand the Genesis Device over to the Reliant. Carol sends Kirk a message querying this, but as Khan is jamming communications she is unable to hear the answer.

Kirk is concerned about the Genesis project, which is designed to reorder the matter on a planet's surface, and takes command of the Enterprise. Khan attacks him before he arrives at Regula 1 and inflicts serious damage on the Enterprise.

Kirk eventually manages to defeat Khan, and the Genesis Device is detonated, creating a new planet. The mission has a great personal cost for Kirk - Spock is killed by radiation exposure when he repairs the Enterprise's warp engines. The Vulcan is given a funeral in space, and his body comes to rest on the Genesis Planet.

The Enterprise returns to Spacedock, where Admiral Morrow tells Kirk that the decision has been taken to retire the badly damaged ship. The same day, Spock's father, Serek, visits Kirk and asks him to recover Spock's body and return it to Vulcan. Sarek explains that before they die, Vulcans mindmeld with one of their most trusted companions and give them their katra, or soul, which is brought back to Vulcan with their body. Spock was unable to mind-meld with Kirk, but did manage to place his katra in Dr. McCoy's mind. Kirk asks Morrow for permission to return to the Genesis Planet, but the admiral refuses. Starfleet Command has placed the planet off limits to everyone except essential personnel. Effectively, this means that the only people allowed to visit the planet are the crew of the U.S.S. Grissom, which includes David Marcus.

This prompts Kirk to make a momentous decision. He disobeys his orders and, with the help of the Enterprise's senior staff, steals his old ship and heads for Genesis. When the Enterprise arrives, the crew discover that the Grissom has been destroyed by a group of Klingon's and that only it. Saavik and David Marcus are alive on the planet's surface. The damaged Enterprise is no match for the Klingon ship, and Kirk is powerless when David is killed by one of the Klingons. He manages to trick most of them into boarding the Enterprise, which he destroys, killing them. Kirk and his crew then manage to retrieve Spock's body, which has been rejuvenated by the Genesis effect. They then narrowly escape the destruction of the Genesis Planet, and take control of the Klingon ship. They use it to take Spock to Vulcan, where his katra and body are reunited.

Kirk then returns to Starfleet Headquarters to face trial, but before he gets there, Earth is 'attacked' by a mysterious probe. Kirk saves the planet by travelling back in time and retrieving two humpback whales from the 20th century. When he returns, Starfleet decides to reduce him in rank for disobeying orders, and places him in command of the USS. Enterprise NCC-1701-A,

This new Enterprise enters service in 2287 and the crew are sent to deal with a disturbance on Nimbus III. When they arrive, a renegade Vulcan, Sybok, takes control of the ship and flies it to the Great Barrier at the centre of the Galaxy. The Enterprise is the first Federation vessel to pass through the barrier, and on the other side the crew encounter a malevolent entity who claims to be God. Sybok is killed, but Kirk manages to defeat the entity and return to normal space.

In 2293, the Enterprise is assigned to escort the KIingon Chancellor; Gorkon, to vital peace talks with the Federation. When Gorkon is assassinated, Kirk and Dr. McCoy beam over to his ship arrested for Gorkon's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment on Rura Penthe, but they escape and Kirk is instrumental in exposing a plot to disrupt peace negotiations with the Klingon Empire. After the Khitomer conference, Kirk once again retires from Starfleet.

Later the same year, Kirk attends the launch of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B. When the ship responds to a distress call from two EI-Aurian transports, he makes essential modifications to the ship's deflector; but is lost and presumed dead. In reality, he is transported to a place known as the Nexus, where he lives an idyllic existence outside the boundaries of normal space-time.

Kirk leaves the Nexus when Captain Jean Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D arrives from 2371 and persuades him to help fight against Dr Tolian Soran, who in one timeline has destroyed millions of lives so that he can re-enter the Nexus. Kirk travels to Veridian III where he dies a hero's death, foiling Soran's scheme and altering the timeline so that millions of lives are saved.

          • 2249 : Enters Starfleet Academy

          • By 2264 : First officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

          • 2271 : Returns to Starfleet
          • 2277 : Promoted to captain, works as an instructor at Starfleet Academy
          • 2293 : Serves as Federation special envoy to the Klingon government

Spock's half Vulcan, half human heritage plays an important part in his Starfleet success. Many Vulcans, deeply distracted by intensely emotional behaviour, find it difficult to function aboard ships dominated by humans, but Spock's dual heredity enables him to function better than most of his race aboard a ship with a full human complement. It is interesting to note that one of the most illustrious careers in Starfleet history very nearly did not happen at all, due to a classic case of parental pressure. Fortunately for Starfleet, Spock chose to defy his father and to follow his own path opening the door for many Vulcans to follow.

Spock's first 18 years in Starfleet are spent in service aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Designated with the Starfleet service number S179-276 SP, Spock initially serves under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. He holds the post of ship's science officer under Pike for 11 years and four months until 2264, when command is turned over to Captain James T. Kirk.

Spock develops a lasting respect and unwavering responsibility toward Pike, but his relationship with Kirk is even stronger. Seemingly against the rules of Vulcan logic, an intense and enduring friendship develops between Spock and his new captain. While it is true that Kirk and Spock are extremely different from one another, their individual talents and strengths unite in a complementary fashion, resulting in a successful partnership that becomes renowned throughout Starfleet. At the end of their service together, Spock holds the rank of commander and has been honoured with many Starfleet decorations.

In 2270, Spock retires from Starfleet, with the intention of returning to Vulcan for the purpose of undergoing the Kolinahr ritual. Designed to purge Vulcans of any vestigial emotions, Spock comes close to attaining the final level, but he is drawn back to Starfleet during the V'Ger incident in 2271; he once again joins the U.S.S. Enterprise as science officer,

Spock stays in Starfleet, and soon after is promoted to the rank of captain, an event that contradicts the claims of a Romulan commander whose attempts to make Spock betray Starfleet in 2268 included the suggestion that he had not been promoted because the organisation was prejudiced against non-humans

He becomes an instructor at Starfleet Academy and, in this capacity, he is given command of the Enterprise when it becomes an Academy training vessel. In 2285, in a brave attempt to ensure that the Enterprise can reach a safe distance from the explosion of the Genesis Device, Spock is exposed to massive radiation in the ship's engine room.

His heroic actions are successful in saving the ship, but cost him his life. Through a remarkable series of events, however, Spock's body is returned to life via the extraordinary energies of Planet Genesis and the efforts of his friends, who defy orders and steal the Enterprise to rescue him.

Spock returns to Earth and chooses to face charges with his crewmates. They are exonerated, leaving Spock to continue to expand his experiences and his successes.

It is a testament to the incredible scope of Spock's abilities that after such a distinguished career, his most important work still lies ahead. Switching his focus from an exploration and instruction to diplomacy, Spock works side by side with his father Sarek to bring about one of the most significant events in the history of Starfleet Acting as a United Federation of Planets special envoy, he is instrumental in brokering the Khitomer Accords which, in 2293, bring about a new era of peace and co-operation between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

Spock's most recent mission, however, is one he undertakes without official permission, resulting in a great deal of controversy. In 2368, he travels alone to Romulus, the heart of the Romulan Empire, in the hopes of beginning a dialogue that will lead to the reunification of the Romulan and Vulcan peoples. This is perhaps his most ambitious and difficult task, and its ultimate outcome is still to be decided.

From his audacious decision not to attend the Vulcan Science Academy, Spock has consistently broken new ground with a success recognised throughout the Galaxy.

Starfleet, the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Empire are just some of the governments, institutions, and civilisations that have been forever changed simply by having come in contact with this remarkable man.

          Leonard H. McCoy

Education : University of Mississippi Earth, 2245-2253

          • 2266 : Assigned to U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 as Chief Medical Officer
          • 2270 : Retires from Starfleet to take up private practice
          • 2271 : Returns to active duty
          • 2365 : Inspects U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Dr. Leonard McCoy is a graduate of the University of Mississippi on Earth. He developed a number of valuable medical techniques, but he is best known as the Chief Medical Officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

McCoy spends some time in Starfleet before joining the Enterprise. During this period, he spends several months on Capella IV as part of a survey team. McCoy is assigned to the Enterprise in 2266, replacing Dr. Mark Piper. In the first few months of his tenure he occasionally finds himself at odds with his commanding officer Captain James Kirk. However, the two men soon establish a good working relationship and become close friends. In 2268, McCoy discovers that he has xenopolycythemia and only has a year to live. He does not want the rest of the crew to know about his condition, and asks Kirk to keep it a secret. Shortly after he learns about his illness, he is part of a party which visits Yonada, a vast spaceship in the form of an asteroid. While there he meets Natira, who asks him to be her mate.

McCoy accepts Natira's proposal and resigns his Starfleet commission, hoping that in his last days can find happiness. But fortunately for McCoy, Spock finds medical knowledge banks on Yonada which Contain a cure for his condition, and he returns to full time service.

After the Enterprise completes its five year mission in 2269. McCoy retires from Starfleet and sets up in private practice. He swears never return to Starfleet, but after only 18 months Admiral Nogura recalls him to active duty using a little known and seldom used reserve activation clause. McCoy is once again posted to the Enterprise under the command of the now Admiral Kirk, who had personally requested that McCoy be assigned to him.

He has been recalled to duty to deal with an emergency situation - the V'Ger crisis - but even after this is resolved, he elects to join Kirk on another five year mission aboard the Enterprise, which is completed in 2276.

In 2285. McCoy is working at Starfleet Academy; he takes part in a training mission for a new crew which is to be assigned to the Enterprise, now under Captain Spock's command. When Khan Noonian Singh attacks Regula 1, the Enterprise abandons its training cruise and heads to the station. During the mission, Khan attacks the Enterprise and Spock is killed while saving the ship. Before he dies, he mind-melds with McCoy and, without offering him any explanation, places his katra, or soul, in the doctor's mind.

This causes some problems for McCoy, who begins to behave erratically. He is unable to distinguish his own personality from Spock's, and is desperate to retrieve the Vulcan's body from the Genesis Planet, which has been declared off limits. McCoy's behaviour brings him to the attention of Starfleet Security and he is eventually arrested. The rest of the Enterprise's crew learn about McCoy's condition, break him out of his holding cell and, in a flagrant violation of orders, retrieve Spock's now regenerated body from the Genesis Planet.

When he returns to Earth, McCoy faces trial alongside his colleagues. However, Starfleet command dismisses all the charges against him, and, like his companions, he is assigned to a new ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-17O1-A. McCoy spends the next seven years serving with distinction aboard this vessel.

In 2293, the Enterprise is assigned to escort Chancellor Gorkon to peace talks with the Federation. Gorkon's ship, Kronos One, is attacked and McCoy and Kirk beam over to offer assistance The two officers are arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rura Penthe dilithium mines. With some assistance from the Enterprise, McCoy and Kirk escape from Rura Penthe and expose a plot to disrupt the peace talks.

McCoy is due to retire with the Enterprise in 2293, but continues to serve in Starfleet into the next century. He rises to the rank of Admiral and influences several members of the next generation of Starfleet officers. One of his friends is Captain Jean Luc Picard, and in 2364, at the age of 137. McCoy comes aboard Picard's new ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-d, to inspect the medical facilities. He spends most of the day aboard the vessel, which he pronounces a fine ship, before returning to the U.S.S. Hood, typically avoiding the transporter and instead travelling by shuttle.

          Montgomery Scott

Starfleet Service Number : SE 19754.T

First Posting : Engineering advisor on an asteroid freight run

Remarks : 'Scotty' serves on a total of 11 ships, but makes his name and reputation as miracle worker when serving as chief engineer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

Every member of a starship's crew has been fully trained to contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of the ship. Some crew members, however; seem to possess not just a high level of competence, but an innate flair for their vocation. Montgomery Scott, chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, is one such person. He has an almost intuitive genius for the mechanical operations of the ship, allowing him to save the day on numerous occasions.

Mr. Scott's knowledge of ship's engines far exceeds what is required for his job, and his reputation as one of the finest engineers in Starfleet is reinforced every time he uses his expertise to save the Enterprise from a perilous situation. For example, when crewman Kevin Riley shuts down the warp engines while under the influence of the Psi 2000 virus, Scotty, working with First Officer Spock, uses a controlled implosion to restore the ship's propulsion, before it is pulled into the atmosphere of a disintegrating planet. On another occasion, the engines are sabotage during a diplomatic mission to Troyius, and Mr. Scott discovers that the entire dilithium crystal assembly is fused; it cannot be fixed without additional dilithium Ever resourceful, he is a to take raw crystals from the Dohlman of Elas's necklace, and fit them in the array, restoring power to the ship.

The chief engineer is highly protective of, and sometimes passionate about, 'his' engines; he has put so much work in them that they have almost become part of himself.

His primary concern, however, is always the ship's mission, and the lives and safety of his crewmates. When Losira, an automated Kalandan agent, fuses together the emergency bypass control valve to the matter / antimatter integrator. Scotty risks his own life to cut off the flow of fuel to the engines, and slow the ship down before the warp drive implodes.

If Scott's talents were limited to to his knowledge of the ship's engines, they would be exceptional enough, but he is equally familiar with ship systems that extend far beyond the area of propulsion. For example, he is just as adept at handling and repairing the transporters.

Scotty has his hands full after a transporter ionizer malfunction causes the crew members in transit, including Captain Kirk, to be divided into two separate beings, their 'good' and 'evil' selves. It also leaves a landing party stranded on a planet, where low temperatures threaten to kill them Under pressure, Scotty fixes the transporter bypass circuits, again with Spock's aid, and ties them directly into the Enterprise's impulse engines. A repair that should take at least a week is accomplished in time to both save the stranded men, and reunite the disparate halves of his captain. During an incident with the U.S.S Constellation, Scotty again completes a series of transporter repairs just in time to rescue Kirk from the doomed ship before it collides with the planet killer. The wily engineer demonstrates ingenuity yet again when he uses the transporter to remove a large number of tribbles from the Enterprise. He beams them onto a Klingon ship, knowing full well there is intense hostility between the two species. This act gives him great satisfaction, as the Klingons had earlier insulted the Enterprise, calling it "a garbage scow" deeply personal affront to Scotty's abilities.

Scotty is familiar with his ship's entire layout. When Riley locks himself in the engine room, Mr. Scott identifies the area that will need to be cut through, even before consulting the ship's plans.

This ebullient man's expertise is not merely a matter of encyclopaedic knowledge; he demonstrates time after time his ability to improvise, even if what he is being asked to do is near impossible. This is amply illustrated when Scotty has only minutes in which to master unfamiliar Romulan cloaking technology. Captain Kirk's bold mission to steal the Romulan cloaking device, and Mr. Spock's willingness to sacrifice himself, look as if they may be in vain, until Scotty is able to link the device to the Enterprise's deflector shield control in just a quarter of an hour. This makes it possible for the outnumbered Starfleet vessel to elude its Romulan attackers.

On another occasion, during Mr. Spock's first command mission, the Shuttlecraft Galileo suffers a complete loss of power; stranding its seven occupants on Taurus II. Hostile natives attack the vessel, and the Enterprise is unable to locate the crew, forcing Scotty to devise a quick solution. Displaying his full resourcefulness, Scotty adapts the Galileo's main reactor to function using a substitute fuel, supplied by the energy from the crew's phasers This gives them just enough power to achieve orbit, and allows the Enterprise to find them.

Scotty's creativity in problem solving is again illustrated when he finds a rather unorthodox way to regain control of the Enterprise after it is commandeered by two Kelvans. These life forms have taken humanoid form, but are unfamiliar with with human sensations, Kirk, therefore instructs the crew to try and confuse and disorient them, by bombarding their senses. Scotty decides that the best way to do this is to introduce one of the Kelvans to the delights of alcohol. It does not take long before the alien is slumped unconscious in his chair, after having drunk too much, thus making it easier for Kirk's crew to retake the Enterprise.

Scotty may loudly protest each time he is asked to make an impossible deadline, and would clearly prefer the luxury of more time, but he is often at his most brilliant and resourceful when faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem.

In 2270, the newly refit Enterprise needs to be launched ahead of schedule; with less than 12 hours to do weeks of work, Scotty's expertise makes it possible When the untried engines fail, and create a wormhole, Scotty manages to rebalance them within three hours.

A decade later, on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A. Kirk. Spock, and Dr. McCoy are locked in an allegedly escape-proof brig by Spock's half-brother, Sybok. Luckily, Scotty knows exactly where to cut through the wall in order to free them. He then gives his friends precise directions to a transmitter, from where they hope to get a distress call through to Starfleet.

Nor do Scotty's qualities desert him as he grows older. After he retires, he travels to the Norpin Colony aboard the U.S.S. Jenolen NCC-2010, but is forced to lock himself into a diagnostic transporter cycle to save himself after the vessel crashes. This inspired piece of thinking preserves his life, but he is not rescued for another 75 years, ironically by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Initially, he finds it difficult to come to terms with the technological advances that have been made while he has been in stasis, but his skills are soon called upon when the Enterprise becomes trapped inside a Dyson sphere. Scotty displays all his old skill and quick thinking to salvage the Jenolen, and uses it in a daring manoeuvre to save the Enterprise.

The role of chief engineer on a starship may not be as high profile as that of the captain, but it is no less vital. Without Montgomery Scott's brilliance and technical genius, the Enterprise would be a shadow of the legend that it is.

          Uhura

Place of Birth : United States of Africa

          Posting : Communications Officer U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Remarks : Uhura is an extremely talented musician and dancer. She has a fine contralto voice and often sings for the Enterprise crew

Lieutenant Uhura is an extremely skilled officer who co-ordinates all onboard and ship-to-ship communications during Captain James Kirk's first five-year mission on the USS. Enterprise NCC-1701. She is in charge of the entire communications division, and is highly efficient and technically adept. If necessary, she can cross circuit the communications panel and make various repairs to her station.

Uhura was born in the United States of Africa on Earth in 2239. She joined Starfleet Academy in 2257 and graduated in 2261. She is serving on the Enterprise by 2266.

Uhura's name is derived the Swahili word 'uhuru', which means Freedom, and has a strong sense of her cultural heritage. She speaks Swahili as easily as she does English, and when the Melkots communicate telepathically with the Enterprise crew, she 'hears them in Swahili. Her quarters are decorated with African artefacts including urns and statues; she has Egyptian-style furniture and a zebra skin throw on her bed. When an illusory Abraham Lincoln refers to her as a 'negress' Uhura tells him that she considers racial insults to be both offensive and outmoded.

Uhura's talents are not limited to communications; aboard the Enterprise she has been known to take both the navigator's and science officer's stations. She is also an occasional member of Ianding parties.

Uhura is more than capable of taking care of herself, as she demonstrates when she is trapped in the Mirror Universe. She succeeds in passing herself off as her brutal counterpart. and is able to manipulate the Mirror SuIu and defeat Marlena in hand-to hand combat. When a landing party is captured by the providers of Triskellion, Uhura is confident enough to to take on two opponents at once, although they defeat her.

The M-113 creature is able to tap into Uhura's deepest desires. It discovers that her ideal man is tall, African and strong. Conversely, Uhura's deepest fears appear to be related to the onset of old age. She is clearly tempted by Harry Mudd's offer of eternal beauty in an android body.

Uhura has a closer relationship with many of her fellow officers than most Enterprise crew members. She embraces Christine Chapel when she learns that Chapel's fiancee, Roger Korby, is still alive; she is deeply distressed when it appears that Captain Kirk has been killed aboard the U.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764. And, later in her career, she appears extremely close to Chief Engineer Scott; in 2287, the two officers even plan to take leave together.

Uhura has a strong sense of humour, and off duty enjoys teasing her crewmates, including Mr. Spock. She has even made up extempore songs about the Vulcan first officer, She is a very talented musician; she has a fine contralto voice which is widely admired, and she regularly sings in the rec room for the crew's entertainment. She has a large repertoire of songs, but Beyond Antares' is a particular favourite. She has learned to play the Vulcan harp and is an accomplished dancer. On one occasion, Kirk even uses her dancing ability to distract Sybok's troops on Nimbus III.

In 2267, Uhura's singing ability leads her into serious trouble. When the Nomad probe decides that her singing serves no useful purpose, it completely wipes her memory. This forces Uhura to undergo re-education. Fortunately for her, this is a relatively swift process and she is able to return to duty within a matter of weeks.

On another occasion, Uhura unwittingly puts the Enterprise in danger when she brings a tribble on board. The small creature is a gift from Cyrano Jones, who is obviously attracted to the beautiful communications officer. Uhura's pet quickly produces offspring, and within hours the Enterprise is overrun with tribbles.

After the Enterprise completes Kirk's first five year mission in 2269, Uhura accepts a promotion to lieutenant commander and stays on the ship under the command of Captain Willard Decker, who supervises the Enterprise's 18 month refit. During the V'Ger crisis she is pleased when Kirk resumes command of the ship.

Uhura is still serving on the Enterprise in 2285 when it is on training duty at Starfleet Academy. However; after the Enterprise is called into active duty and badly damaged in a confrontation with Khan Noonien Singh, Uhura accepts a posting to a remote transporter station. This assignment is shortlived as Uhura uses her position to help the rest of the Enterprise's senior staff to steal their ship. She meets them on Vulcan shortly afterward, and is part of Kirk's crew when it makes a journey to 1980's Earth. In the past, she and Chekov undertake a mission to retrieve vital radioactive isotopes from the United States aircraft carrier Enterprise. When Uhura returns to the 23rd century, all charges against her are dropped and she is assigned to a new ship the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A.

She continues serving on this new Enterprise for several years. Uhura is a highly respected communications specialist; in 2293, she cancels a seminar at Starfleet Academy, which she is supposed to be chairing, to attend a briefing about the destruction of the klingon moon, Praxis.

She is part of Kirk's crew during his last days on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701A and plays an important role in deceiving the Klingons during the mission to rescue Kirk and Dr. McCoy from Rura Penthe

          Hikaru Sulu

          Rank : Lieutenant

Posting : Physicist, later helmsman on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Remarks :Sulu serves at the helm of the Enterprise for an exceptional 25 years from 2265 to 2290; he holds the position over two five-year missions under James T. Kirk. Training missions under Spock and a final tour of duty with Kirk aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Hikaru SuIu joins the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2265. He is originally assigned to duty as a physicist, but, shortly after joining the crew, he transfers to the position of senior helm officer.

It is in this capacity that Sulu serves a number of tours of duty on board both the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. Even as helm officer, Sulu continues to make good use of his physics background throughout his career; a working knowledge of complex mathematics often plays a key role in the split-second navigational decisions he must make when trying to extricate the ship from danger Sulu's primary work station is located at the forward console of the who works with him to pilot the ship.

Sulu and the duty navigator rely heavily upon the astrogator console that sits between them and allows them to pinpoint the exact galactic and local position of the ship at all times. The unit also includes other important instruments, such as a ship's chronometer.

Sulu often uses a special viewer that emerges upon command from the helm console and provides him with direct access to a variety of readouts that display, among other things, the positions of other ships and any stellar phenomena. It also allows him to assess any damage inflicted upon enemy vessels during hostile encounters. Sulu's other responsibilities include overseeing evasion and efficiency drills, and monitoring the coolant temperatures of the engine's primary manifolds.

Due to the many long hours spent working with them, Sulu often develops a personal relationship with the navigator sharing his station. These friends include relief navigator Kevin Thomas Riley, navigator Pavel Chekov, and navigator Kevin Bailey. When the Enterprise is threatened with destruction by Balok's huge spherical starship the Fesadus, Bailey loses his composure on the bridge; Sulu shows his loyalty to his friend by trying to cover for him until he can pull himself together. Sulu also develops a close friendship with Chekov that lasts many years.

Sulu has a good relationship with his superiors aboard the Enterprise. He has a healthy respect for both First Officer Spock's intelligence, and his ability to match wits with the best of them. He admires Spock's Vulcan stoicism, and tries to emulate that composure in the most difficult situations Whether trying to outmanoeuvre a First Federation probe, shadow a Romulan Bird.of-Prey, or outrun a Klingon Battle cruiser SuIu does his job with efficiency and dedication, always maintaining a good sense of humour.

Off the ship, too, Sulu is a reliable and resourceful officer. When he is part of a geologic survey that becomes trapped on the icy surface of planet AIfa 177 after a transporter malfunction, he maintains his high spirits even as the planet's temperature begins to drop to sub-zero temperatures. He jokes with a concerned Kirk that he would like to get back to the ship before the "skiing season," and requests that the Enterprise send down some coffee or rice wine. Even as the temperature continues to drop, Sulu is able to bolster the spirits of the rest of the landing party. Although suffering from extreme exposure and frostbite, he jokes with them about why "room service" is taking so long. This dry sense of humour endears him to many of his crewmates.

Sulu's quarters on the Enterprise are standard officer issue. Located on Deck 5, along with the majority of other senior crew's quarters, these Constitution class starship rooms are designed mostly with the conservation of space in mind. Sulu's popularity with his ship mates, and his wide variety of personal and professional interests, keep him very busy.

The Enterprise's mission of exploration and discovery offers Sulu the opportunity to explore a myriad of interests while serving on board. For example, his fascination with botany is encouraged when he is allowed to grow exotic alien plants; while off duty, he often spends a great deal of time in the ship's herbarium, nurturing them. He especially enjoys eating his meals there, as the plant filled enviroment is a welcome diversion from his normal duties.

Sulu's service aboard the Enterprise continues thoughout its entire five-year mission under Kirk's command, cementing his position as both a respected bridge officer and a trusted friend to his crewmates.

Sulu remains with the Enterprise during its extensive refit between 2270 and 2271, continuing at the helm with intent to serve under Captain Willard Decker; the arrival of the V'ger spacecraft and Decker's subsequent disappearance leads to Sulu's return to Kirk's command as the now-admiral takes the centre seat.

Sulu continues to excel in his post during the Enterprise's subsequent five-year mission, and again during its final voyages, under the command of Captain Spock, when the starship is reassigned to Starfleet Academy as a cadet training vessel, Sulu works with a number of other Enterprise officers, including Spock, Lt. Uhura, and Dr, McCoy in several training missions and simulations as part of the ongoing Academy curriculum.

Following Spock's death in 2285,Sulu's final mission at the helm of the original U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 is an illegal one; he is part of the group that steals the starship in order to rescue Spock's body from the Genesis Planet. In the following year, Sulu and the rest of his crewmates are cleared of charges against them after their involvement in saving Earth from the alien Cetacean probe. Afterward, he is reassigned to the new U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A.

Sulu continues to hold his traditional position on the starship until the year 2290, When he is granted a well deserved command of his own and is promoted to the position of captain aboard the U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-2000.

Pavel Andrejevich Chekov was born on Earth in 2245, probably of Russian descent. He is an only child. Chekov has appealing looks and long brown hair. He also possesses a great deal of natural charm, and this affords him some success with the ladies, though no relationship seems permanent. In this regard he seems to emulate one of his heroes: his first commander, Captain James T. Kirk.

Chekov has a Russian accent at least through to the launch of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B in 2293; he pronounces his 'v's as 'w's. He is proud of everything. For instance, he reports that the sector of space in which Sherman's Planet is located was first mapped by famous Russian astronomer Ivan Burkoff, when in fact it was charted by British astronomer John Burke of the Royal Academy. He is disparaging of anything obviously not Russian, making comments such as: "Scotch was invented by a little old lady from Leningrad." Many people, however, consider this ethnocentrism to be Chekov's idea of a joke, and do not take him seriously.

Chekov enters Starfleet Academy in 2263 and graduates four years later. While there, he temporarily becomes involved with a young woman named Irina Galliullin. But while he is dedicating his life to Starfleet ideals, she is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with them.

They part company when she resigns from Starfleet. By Stardate 3018.2 in 2267, Chekov is an ensign aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 under the command of James T. Kirk. Though the purpose of the voyage is to give him both experience and knowledge, his primary duty station is navigation. In 2285, Khan Noonien Singh claims to remember meeting him aboard the Enterprise in 2266. Unless Khan is mistaken, this implies Chekov served aboard the ship on his field assignment while still at Starfleet Academy.

During his years on the Enterprise, Chekov experiences many exciting, though sometimes dangerous missions. He often saves the day, although not always directly. On Stardate 3478.2 he is a member of the landing party that beams down to Gamma Hydra IV, and is the only one not affected by a rapid-ageing disease. After taking many tissue samples from him, Dr. Leonard McCoy discovers that Chekov is immune to the disease because of the natural adrenaline pumped into his system when he was frightened by the unexpected discovery of a partially decomposed human body.

By 2271, Chekov is Chief Security Officer aboard the Starship Enterprise under the command of Willard Decker, and later Admiral Kirk.

Following his time on the Enterprise, he is assigned as first officer on the U.S.S. Reliant, where he helps Captain Clark TerreII search for a suitably dead planet on which to test the Genesis Device. Chekov briefly works against Starfleet interests while under the temporary influence of Khan. After Khan destroys the Reliant, Chekov one again joins the crew of the Enterprise. Later in 2285, Chekov helps James Kirk steal the ship so he and his crewmates can look for for the body of Captain spock on the Genesis Planet.

In 2286, along with the rest of the Enterprise bridge crew, Chekov travels back in time to 1986. While attempting to escape from a security team aboard the aircraft-carrier Enterprise, he is injured so badly that he most certainly would have died had not Dr. McCoy intervened with 23rd-century medicine.

Upon returning to their own time, Chekov and his conspirators stand trial for grand theft of the starship and other crimes. All charges are dismissed except one disobeying direct orders, and that applies only to Admiral Kirk, who is demoted to captain as punishment.

By 2293, and the launch of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B, Chekov has become a competent and confident senior officer, famous for having served with James Kirk He knows Captain Hlkaru SuIu's daughter, Demora, and introduces her to Kirk.

During an emergency, when he discovers that sickbay personnel will not come aboard until the Tuesday following the launch of the new Enterprise, Chekov takes the initiative and selects two journalists covering the event to be nurses. Like every officer who ever served with Kirk, Chekov has long since learned to think on his feet.
