..extract embedded contents (images, sounds, etc.) from ANY file!

  • Grew tired of keeping MegaBytes of Powerpoints, just because they have a picture that you like?
  • Tired of having to copies the images of a Word document one by one?
  • Got a "mysterious" file, and have no idea which are its contents?
  • You wish you could read the text of a document of an unknown format?

Frisk helps you with this and other similar problems!

    HOW DOES IT WORK

Drag on FRISK.EXE the file you wish to examine, and wait 'til its done.

In [filename]_text.txt (eg. "trythis_text.txt") you'll find the optimized extracted text: the non-readable parts have been suppressed in order to make your reading easier - but, should you find missing parts, re-integrate them by reading [filename]_full-text.txt (eg. "trythis_full-text.txt"): it contains all the textual characters found.

[filename]_log.txt contains the list of what's been extracted, and whence.

Regarding the actual embeddings (the files "hidden" within the examined file), they'll be numbered progressively and saved with the same name of the file. (eg. if you frisk "trythis.pps" the output will be eg. "trythis_001.jpg" and "trythis_002.wav".)

Notice how the extracted files might be longer than they originally were (for they may contain misc data in-between one embedding and the following), howevery they should work correctly. (Images and sounds are easily restored to their exact size, by opening them with an editor and then re-writing them - even without modifying them.)

Some extracted files may be corrupted: if the built-in embeddings were split or compressed, there's nothing I can do about that; but if the problem is due to an embedding containing data similar to a different filetype, a "repaired" version of the file is generated too. :-) (eg. "trythis_001b.jpg", which includes both "trythis_001.jpg" and "trythis_002.wav" and "trythis_003.swf" - supposing the three latter were not real embeddings, but parts of the same imagine, and quite similar to an audio file and a ShockWave flash animation.)

If you ain't understood jack in-so-far, nevermind: just drag your file on FRISK.EXE and then check out the files it generates one by one. :-)

    FEATURES

v2.3: faster; detects the exact ending of JPG images; also extracts PPM images

    LIMITATIONS (so to speak)

    ONE FINAL SUGGESTION
Powerpoints and Word's DOCs may be frisked with better results than this "brute force" method, by examining them with WinSieve - where Frisk will soon be integrated, by the way. ;-)
